Veggie Friendly Restaurants
Sometimes it can be difficult to find a vegetarian restaurant that goes beyond the run of the mill vegetable risotto and obligatory tomato based pasta dish. Honestly, I don’t know why it’s so hard in this day and age to find a fantastic restaurant that caters to vegetarians adequately and I am surprised that more chefs don’t take up the challenge of creating flavour packed dishes that don’t contain meat.
Having said that, there are some great restaurants that not only offer vegetarian options on the menu but a number of options and not just the standard 1 dish. So, I thought I would compile a list of restaurants that I’ve visited that I have found that cater to vegetarians and offer interesting, flavour packed dishes and are also willing to adapt dishes to suit your needs should there be nothing on the menu that tickles your taste buds.
I plan for this list to evolve and grow over time as I discover new restaurants that I enjoy. If you’d like to recommend your favourite vegetarian restaurant please let me know by leaving a comment.
BRISBANE
Baguette
http://baguette.com.au
Baguette is probably my favourite restaurant in Brisbane. Not only do they have a vegetarian section on their menu, but they will go that extra mile and create a dish on demand should you visit so frequently you’ve tried all the dishes on the vegetarian menu, like me.
Byblos
http://www.byblosbar.com.au/bar/
Byblos is located on the wharf at Portside and specialise in Mediterranean cuisine and fantastic cocktails. I can highly recommend the Phonecian Sunset Cocktail and the vegetarian mixed platter.
Grappino’s
http://www.grappino.com.au/
Grappino is a fantastic Italian restaurant based in Paddington and their Gnocchi Alla Funghi is to die for. A word of warning, if you are wanting to visit Grappino you need to book in advance as it’s very popular.
Mario at The Dining Room
http://www.thediningroom.com.au/
Mario’s offers fantastic traditional Italian fare served the Italian way. Their menu includes a number of vegetarian friendly options, but staff are also happy to talk to the chef to adapt dishes to vegetarian and vegan dietary requirements.
Mondo Organics
http://www.mondo-organics.com.au/
Mondo Organics, as the name implies, serve fantastic organically sourced food and wine. Their menu changes frequently but always includes vegetarian and vegan dishes.
My Thai
http://www.mythai.com.au/
My Thai have been in business since 1993 and offer an extensive vegetarian menu and are also willing to adapt dishes to suit vegetarian requirements. They also have a cooking school which is worth checking out.
Sono – Brisbane City
http://www.sonorestaurant.com.au/
Sono’s Brisbane City Restuarant offers fantastic Japanese food that is served promptly and packed full of fresh ingredients. I also love seeing the waitresses dressed in their kimono’s. Whilst Sono also has a restaurant at Portside I have found that their Portside location does not offer as much variety for vegetarians.
Talay Thai
http://www.talaythai.com.au/
Talay Thai offer fantastic and fresh Thai food that you can also takeaway. Also, if you explain you are vegetarian and what you do and don’t eat (for me this includes no meat stocks, fish stocks/sauce) they will ensure that you choose an appropriate dish or modify the dish to accommodate. My favourite dish is the vegetarian Pad King.
SYDNEY
Alio
http://www.alio.com.au/
Unpretentious Italian food in Redfern, that offers a wonderful vegetarian degustation which is very well priced.
Govindas
http://www.govindas.com.au/
A Hare Krishna restaurant and cinema in Darlinghurst.
Green Gourmet
http://www.greengourmet.com.au/index.html
Green gourmet create food that is 100% vegan which is focussed in nourishing the body and mind. They aspire to do this by producing food that is nutritious for the body and the development of a balanced mind.
Lal Qila
http://www.lalqila.com.au/
An Indian/Pakistani restaurant in Redfern, recommended by reader Hermoine. Her tip is the sizzling paneer!
Nourishing Soul
http://www.bnourished.com.au/
A new vegetarian restaurant in Redfern with an Asian twist. Reader Hermoine suggests recommends the amazing crispy tofu that will convert anyone!
Yullis
http://yullis.com.au/
A vegetarian restaurant and bar in Surry Hills. Reader Hermoine says while it’s hard to get a seat but if you can it is worth it!
ADELAIDE
The Manse
http://www.themanserestaurant.com.au/
The Manse Restaurant is a restaurant I wish was located in Brisbane. While certainly not a place you can afford to eat at regularly, they deserve mention due to the effort they go to in satisfying their vegetarian customers. If you are planning a special occassion for a vegetarian friend/partner or sibling this is sure to knock their socks off. You might like to check out my review before you visit.

Love this list; Great idea!! How hard is it sometimes to find a good vegetarian restaurant that understands what a vegetarian eats and is willing to serve up interesting and tasty dishes. I have lived in Brisbane off and on over the years and would love to recommend My Thai, in Auchenflower, it has been an absolute favourite place to eat out for years. They have a great vegetarian menu, using wonderfully fresh ingredients and are also willing to adapt any of their dishes to vegetarian. Wonderful service and atmosphere and simply awesome food! oh and mmmm Sono
My recent post Tempura Udon
Thanks Trudy for the My Thai recommendation. I've added it to the list
Hi Jennifer – my boyfried and I both vegetarians and are constantly looking for new places to go in Sydney – so far the following restaurants neve fail to provide us with lots of yummy veggie options;
Lal Qila – an Indian/Pakistani restaurant in Redfern (my favourite is the sizzling paneer!)
Yullis – a vegetarian restaurant and bar in Surry Hills – hard to get a seat but if you can it is worth it!
Alio – Italian restuarant in Redfern that does a wonderful vegetarian degustation which is very well priced
Nourishing Soul – a new vegetarian restaurant in Redfern with an Asian twist – amazing crispy tofu that will convert anyone!
Govindas – a Hare Krishna restaurant and cinema in Darlinghurst – try not to eat too much and then fall asleep during the movie!
These are just a few I can think of off the top of my head but please let me know if you'd like any further recommendations in the Sydney area.
Thanks so much for these suggestions Hermione!! I am sure my Sydney readers will find this useful, so I will add them to the list, along with their websites. Please feel free to send any other suggestions through.
