Each week I look forward to seeing what goodies we receive in our farmers boxes. There are all the usual things like potatoes, carrots, lettuce, tomatoes and onions, but it’s the seasonal items I look forward to seeing. Prior to signing up for our farmers boxes I used to purchase particular ingredients that I needed for recipes I wanted to make, but nowadays it’s my farmers boxes that guide my cooking as I look for new and interesting ways to use the ingredients I’m given. A bit like a MasterChef mystery box challenge I suppose.
So last week when I received an overflowing bag of black grapes my mind started churning with ideas. Of course we could simply eat the grapes as is, but for some reason black grapes don’t appeal to me as much as their green cousins. After looking for inspiration I remembered the stunningly beautiful Concord Grape Sorbet I saw on Desserts for Breakfast. Inspired but wanting to go in a slightly different direction I settled on a Grape and Pink Champagne Sorbet. Anything with Champagne in it can’t be a bad thing can it? And well, this sorbet is really good. It’s not overly sweet, is light and is scoopable straight from the freezer. The latter item is particularly important to me because being the impatient person I am I don’t like to have to wait before I scoop my sorbets or ice creams.
So tell me, is your cooking inspired by ingredients or particular recipes you want to try or a little of both?
Speaking of sorbets, I hope you’ve got your entry in for my ice cream maker giveaway. The winner will receive the ice cream maker of their choice from Kitchenware Direct.
- 550g of black seedless grapes
- 1 cup of pink Champagne (or regular Champagne)
- ½ cup of sugar
- juice of 1 lemon
- Place the grapes, pink Champagne and sugar in a saucepan over a medium low heat. Bring to the boil and reduce to a simmer. Reduce heat to low and simmer for 10 minutes or until the skins of the grapes split.
- Drain through a fine sieve into a large jug or bowl and use the back of a wooden spoon to press the grapes to release their juices. Extract as much from the grapes as you can. Cover the mixture and refrigerate until completely cold. I usually leave the mixture overnight.
- Remove the mixture from the refrigerator and add the lemon juice and pour into your ice cream maker and churn according to your manufacturers instructions. The longer you churn the sorbet the lighter in colour it will become.

I love it.. home-delivered Masterchef mystery box. How exciting!
The colour of this sorbet is just gorgeous. It's almost too pretty too eat. Not the almost.
Thanks Claire :D
This looks really lovely. I like the pinkness. A great way to use up those dark grapes
Thanks Tania :)
Love this Jennifer! I've never had grape sorbet before!! Sounds phenomenal!
Yum, I love this idea and it looks so classy! This will go on my to make list!
Such a pretty sorbet! I love Concord and Japanese Kyohoo grapes but local black grapes pack great flavour too so I bet this sorbet tastes gorgeous.
I'm often led by ingredients when deciding what to cook or I'll twist a recipe around to accommodate something I have in hand.
Delicious! Its so girly I love it :D
Sigh! I wish I lived in AU to qualify for this giveaway!!! I need an ice cream maker stat!! and make this delicious sorbet. Cannot wait for summer :)
Aww sorry Kiran. :( Hopefully soon I will be able to run an international giveaway.

Thank you so much Rosa :)
I went out for dinner last night and had the most incredible melon, tangerine and mango sorbets... Which left me craving sorbet and looking for a good recipe. I think I've found it! I love how the addition of alcohol makes ice cream scoopable straight from the freezer and the colour in your sorbet is incredible. Wow.
I'm totally wish you :) I don't really like black grapes hehe I love love LOVE the colour of this sorbet ~ Hope I win the give away and be able to make this sorbet with the new ice-cream machine :P
Which farmers box do you get? Because I tried this local farmers delivery service once, but didn't really like their stuff too much :(
We get the Aussie Farmers boxes. We've found them great, although occasionally we still have a quality issue. I guess it depends on what the farmers give them.
Gorgeous pink colors, love it! And "champagne sorbet" sounds already luxury and classy;)

I am your opposite ! I always prefer black grapes to the green ones :) The sorbet looks so pretty!
This sounds truly delicious! Would love to try it :)
I saw your gorgeous photo on Foodgwaker and loved the colour! Black grapes are my favourites because of the colour and meaty flesh, but you have taken them to a new level. Gorgeous!
Thanks Martyna :)
oh my goshness - look at that gorgeous pink colour - stunning!
Thanks Jas :D

This sounds incredible! Very creative to have gone with a sorbet. Love it.
Wow! The colour is amazing, such a vibrant and delicious looking sorbet, I've been just eating my black grapes in greedy mouthfuls from the fridge :) but this is such a lovely idea! yum!!
What a delicious frozen treat! Love the pink color.
Cheers:)
Jennifer, that opening picture is absolutely stunning! I wanted to reach in with a spoon and scoop up a spoonful of it on this warm evening! :D
This looks stunning - fabulous job! Love the addition of the bubbly too. Mom has a vineyard with Concords and the colour of black grapes remind me of being there for harvest :)
Ya just like Kiran said. I wish I lived in Aus. And I am just lost on those beautiful pictures and I can see magic in your eyes and hands :-)
Aww thank you Vijtha. You are so sweet. :)
How beautiful and refreshing - I love that you used champagne. This makes me long for summer!
I didn't have concord grapes or pink champagne, but it still came out fantastic (with the same punchy colour) using black seedless grapes and sparkling shiraz. Yum!
I'm glad it worked out well for you. :)
I am confused on what type of grapes to use, the regular dark ones from grocery store or can you use concord grapes?
Hi Sandra, you can use either ordinary black grapes or concord :)
