I love these cookies, they are so much fun. I love the brightly coloured smarties and how they contrast with the dark chocolate cookie. The cookies have an addictive chewy texture (which is even more wonderful when they are slightly warm), making it difficult to stop at one cookie.
These gorgeous cookies are perfect for children and big kids alike as they illicit smiles when they see the cookies which only widens when they eat them.
I based this recipe on the chewy chocolate cookie recipe found in 500 cookies – the only cookie compendium you’ll ever need by Philippa Vanstone.
Chewy Chocolate Smartie Cookies
Ingredients:
150g of dark chocolate, broken into pieces
50g of butter, cut into cubes
50g of plain flour
1/4 tsp of baking powder
2 eggs
250g of caster sugar
1 tsp of vanilla essence
100g of dark chocolate, chopped
340g bag of smarties
Method:
1. Preheat the oven to 180 degrees celsius and line a baking tray with baking paper.
2. Melt the chocolate pieces and butter in the microwave or one the stove top and allow to cool.
3. In a mixer, beat together the eggs, sugar and vanilla essence until thick and pale.
4. Pour the melted chocolate into the beaten eggs and sugar and stir through.
5. Sift in the flour and baking powder and stir through before adding the chopped chocolate and mix until combined.
6. Using an ice cream scoop, scoop the mixture onto the lined baking trays. Without flattening the mixture too much, press smarties into the top of the cookies.
7. Bake in the oven for 8 to 10 minutes and cool on the tray before transferring to a cooling rack. If you put the cookies onto the cooling rack while hot they will become marked by the wires from the rack.

My kids would love these. They're so colorful and fun!

I was planning on having a baking day with my 6-year-old niece next weekend, and methinks these cookies will definitely have to be one of the recipes we do. Particularly given her unparalleled love of Smarties...
Let me know how you go with the cookies. I hope they are a hit. :)
I tried this recipe today, but the dough consistency was way too thin for cookies. Does the recipe really only call for fifty grams of flour?
Hi, yes, the recipe only calls for 50g of flour.
Did you make sure the butter and sugar were well creamed before adding the chocolate and flour and chocolate chunks? The batter for the cookies is very thin, but it's fine when cooked. Just make sure you don't press the cookies down too much before baking as due to the thin consistency they spread a lot in the oven.
Très jolis biscuits !!! merci pour ta visite et ton commentaire sur mon blog

Hi Vievey! :D Thank you so much for your kind comments, I am so glad you enjoyed them. They are a favourite in our house.
Chewy Chocolate Smartie Cookies - is this recipe correct. the amount of plain flour does not seem correct - 50g of plain flour is not enough to make a thick cookie dough. The amount of caster sugar - 250g seems excessive. Should it be 250g of plain flour and 50g of caster sugar?
If this is so, should there be more baking powder?
i saw a post stating that the recipe only calls for 50g of flour however when i make it the mixture was extremely thin - runny (almost a watery texture) in fact. So I added another 200g of flour and another teaspoon of baking powder and they turned out ok.
If the mix is runny how do they stay on the baking tray without spreading all over the tray and turning into one big biscuit on the tray?
also they did taste yum and chewy which is fantastic, but were probably a little sweet - too sugary??? so I'm wondering if it should be 50g of caster sugar and 250g flour?
Hi Shannon,
The recipe is correct. The key to these cookies is to whisk the sugar and the eggs until very thick and pale. If they are not whipped enough the cookies will be runny, so make sure the mixture forms thick cream ribbons. Then add the chocolate and flour which will thicken the mixture.
And yes, they were very chewy, thanks to the amount of sugar and small amount of flour. They didn't taste too sugary as the bitterness of the dark chocolate helps counteract that.
Anyway, I hope that all helps. Let me know if you have any other questions :D
these were rubbish. didn't turn out at all - just ran all over the place. obviously some mistake on the recipe - my advice - don't cook these.
Hi Jc,
I'm sorry the cookies didn't turn out for you. :( They are a little tricky to get right. The trick is to make sure you whip the egg yolks and sugar until they are very thick and pale and the mixture holds thick creamy ribbons. Then fold through the flour and melted chocolate, which will thicken the mixture. Just make sure the chocolate has cooled a little before mixing through.
I hope those tips help.
