Chewy chocolate smartie cookies

I love these cookies, they are so much fun.  I love the brightly coloured smarties and how they contrast with the dark chocolate cookie. The cookies have an addictive chewy texture (which is even more wonderful when they are slightly warm), making it difficult to stop at one cookie.

These gorgeous cookies  are perfect for children and big kids alike as they illicit smiles when they see the cookies which only widens when they eat them.

Chocolate smartie cookies

I based this recipe on the chewy chocolate cookie recipe found in 500 cookies – the only cookie compendium you’ll ever need by Philippa Vanstone.

They'd go down so well at a kid's party or bake stall. So vibrant! Sold on the chewy texture too. Chewy beats crunchy anyday.

I was planning on having a baking day with my 6-year-old niece next weekend, and methinks these cookies will definitely have to be one of the recipes we do. Particularly given her unparalleled love of Smarties…

I tried this recipe today, but the dough consistency was way too thin for cookies. Does the recipe really only call for fifty grams of flour?

Hi, yes, the recipe only calls for 50g of flour.

Did you make sure the butter and sugar were well creamed before adding the chocolate and flour and chocolate chunks? The batter for the cookies is very thin, but it's fine when cooked. Just make sure you don't press the cookies down too much before baking as due to the thin consistency they spread a lot in the oven.
